We normally do our tours at Castle AFB, just between Atwater and Merced. Why Castle? Castle is a location that's at a good intersection of public, reasonably dark, and easily accessible. For those seeking a dark sky experience, we also go out on excursions to further out locations that are darker and provide wonderful views of deep sky objects, the milky way, and more. Check our calendar for more details!
For stargazing excursions, we charge a flat rate of $50 for two hours. In case of weather-related cancellations, we accept payments on-site. Special events and walk-ups are priced differently; please contact us for prices.
Of course! We love having children come out and look through our telescopes. We only ask that parents keep an eye on their children as we are out in nature, and the telescopes are relatively expensive.
It depends. Some sites do not allow animals, and some do. Please check with us before you plan on bringing your pet.
If pets are allowed at the site, we ask that if you bring a pet (non-service animal), they be well-mannered and that you pick up after them. They must be leashed to you (the handler) at all times. As a non-service animal, if someone is uncomfortable around your pet, please give that person space. If your animal has bad manners or there is a failure to be respectful of others, you will be asked to leave with no refund.
No, it is a stargazing tour. We will show you different planets and constellations and give you a tour of the stars. No actual moving is involved. We do recommend that people bring a camping chair to sit in.
All year long: A camping chair to sit in. Drinks and snacks in non-disposable containers are welcome.
Remember, whatever we pack in must be packed out, so be thoughtful with your snacks. All trash must be disposed of in the provided trashcan. We want to respect the natural setting and wildlife of the area we have our tours in. Please be mindful of what you bring, and we strongly encourage our guests to leave snacks at home if they can.
Seasonal: Bug spray, blankets, sweaters, jackets.
No alcohol or drugs/smoking allowed (fire hazard).
Reservations are needed, and an address will be emailed to those who are coming. We move around to get the best possible spot, so we will not always be at the same location.
If we are having a walk-up event, it will be scheduled, and you will not need a reservation.
We like to keep groups to a smaller size so that everyone can get a turn to look through the different scopes. We try to limit the number to 12 people, but if you have more, please reach out to us with the details, and we'll see what we can work out!
Yes! We can come to your event at night or during the day. Please contact us with details!
Cancellations on our part due to weather (i.e. clouds) result in full refunds.
We have contacted and been advised by ophthalmologists to wipe our eyepieces with alcohol swabs between each guest, which we allow to sit for ten seconds, and then clean up with a dry, lint-free cotton wipe to ensure a streak-free view.
Curtis here! I'm the owner-operator of gateway stargazing. I always wear my glasses when using the telescope. It can feel a little uncomfortable at first, but you can safely (and I do) push your glasses up against the eyepiece. I actually recommend using your glasses when you view! Glasses usually correct your vision close to 'normal', which eliminates the need to adjust the focuser to your unique visual needs.
